Research-Informed, Montessori-Inspired: Why Blend Science with Timeless Educational Principles

As parents and educators, we all want to know the same thing: What kind of learning environment helps children thrive?
There are many preschool philosophies to choose from, each with its own strengths and unique approach. You may have heard of Waldorf Schools, Forest Schools, Play-Based, Reggio-Emilia, and Montessori before. But how do you decide which approach is right for your child?
At Nurturing Minds Preschool, we've built our program around the combination of two powerful perspectives: the timeless wisdom of Montessori education with the continually evolving findings of development science.
As a developmental psychologists and neuroscientist, I believe educational decisions should be guided both by the wisdom of experienced educators and the best available scientific evidence. Rather than choose one over the other, I believe the strongest educational environments are grounded in both experience and evidence.
What does Montessori-Inspired Mean?
Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator whose observations of children revolutionized early childhood education over a century ago (1912). Remarkably, many of her ideas and observations remain consistent with what developmental psychologists and neuroscientists continue to discover through decades of research.
At Nurturing Minds Preschool, we embrace many core Montessori principles, including:
Child-led exploration and choice
Carefully prepared learning environments
Hands-on, concrete learning materials
Mixed-age classrooms that encourage peer learning
Respect for each child's individual pace of development
Fostering independence and practical life skills

Why Research Matters
Montessori education has many strengths, but developmental science has advanced considerably since Dr. Montessori's original work in the early 1900s.
Today, researchers study children's development using carefully designed experiments, longitudinal studies, brain imaging, and observations of thousands of children across diverse cultures and educational settings. This growing body of evidence allows educators to continually refine best practices.
As a developmental research psychologists and neuroscientist, I believe educational decisions should be informed by the strongest available evidence.
Research has helped us better understand topics such as:
How and when children develop self-regulation and executive functioning
The critical role of secure relationships and attachment in learning
The importance of pretend play for cognitive and social development
How language develops through rich conversations with adults
The benefits of outdoor explorations and nature-based learning

Rather than replacing Montessori educational principles, modern research of often strengthens and expands them. One of the exciting aspects of developmental science is that it is continually evolving. Every year, researchers publish thousands of new studies examining how children think, learn, play, regulate their emotions, build relationships, and develop language. While no single study provides all the answers, decades of research allows us to identify patterns that consistently support healthy child development. At Nurturing Minds Preschool, we strive to integrate these findings into our daily practice while honoring the timeless insights of Montessori education.
Where Montessori and Research Align:
Children Learn Through Active Explorations. Research consistently demonstrates that young children learn most effectively when they are actively engaged with materials rather than passively receiving information.
Developmental psychologist Jean Piaget first proposed that children actively construct knowledge through interacting with their environment rather than simply absorbing information from adults (a revolutionary idea at the time!). More recently, cognitive scientist Alison Gopnik and her colleagues at UC Berkeley have demonstrated that toddlers learn like little scientists through forming hypotheses, testing ideas, and updating their understanding of the world through gathered evidence (she has several great books on the topic!).
This research reinforces the Montessori emphasis on allowing children to explore, manipulate, and discover rather than relying solely on direct instruction.
Hands-on learning encourages deeper conceptual understanding, stronger memory, and improved problem-solving, particularly when paired with guidance from teachers.
Independence Builds Confidence. Allowing children to complete meaningful tasks independently helps develop self-confidence, persistence, and executive functioning skills (Diamond, 2013).
Developmental psychologists Erik Erikson argued that early childhood is a critical period for developing autonomy and self-confidence. Montessori classrooms naturally support these developmental needs by giving children meaningful opportunities to make choices and care for themselves. Everyday activities such as pouring water, preparing snacks, cleaning up, and dressing independently become important opportunities for learning and building confidence.
Children Thrive in Prepared Environments. Young children benefit from predictable routines and thoughtfully organized environments that encourage exploration without becoming overwhelming.
Modern neuroscience has also demonstrated that the early childhood years represent one of the most rapid periods of brain development across the lifespan (Gilmore et al., 2018). During these years, children's experiences help shape the neural connections that support language, self-regulation, memory, and social-emotional development. This is one reason why rich, responsive, play-based learning environments are so important during the preschool years (Hirsh-Pasek, 2009).
When materials are accessible and intentionally arranged, children can make meaningful choices while developing responsibility and independence.
Learning is Social. Developmental research also highlights something Montessori deeply appreciated: children learn from one another.
Developmental psychologist Lev Vygotsky emphasized that learning occurs through social interaction, with adults and more capable peers providing support within what he called the Zone of Proximal Development (the skills children can accomplish with guidance before they are able to perform them independently). Decades of research have continued to support this idea, showing that children often learn concepts more deeply when working alongside peers than when working independently (Rogoff, 1990; Tomasello, 1999).
Mixed-age classrooms provide opportunities for younger children to observe older peers while giving older children opportunities to develop leadership, empathy, and communication skills.
Being research-informed also means recognizing that no educational philosophy has every answer. For example, current developmental research suggests that:
Guided conversation with teachers can deepen children's understanding.
Imaginative and pretend play supports creativity, language, emotional understanding, and flexible thinking.
Warm, responsive teacher-child relationships are among the strongest predictors of positive developmental outcomes.
Individual differences mean that children benefit from flexible approaches rather than one-size-fits-all instruction.
These findings complement Montessori principles while allowing us to create an environment that reflects what we know about child development today.
One of the strongest evaluations of Montessori education was conducted by developmental psychologists Angeline Lillard and colleagues (2006). In a randomized lottery-based study, children attending Montessori schools demonstrated stronger academic achievement, executive functioning, social understanding, and creative writing compared with peers attending traditional schools. This research provides encouraging evidence that many Montessori practices can positively support children's development.
Why This Matters for Your Child
Every decision we make, from classroom routines to learning activities, is guided by a simple approach: What does the best available evidence suggest will support children's healthy development?
Of course, part of our role is preparing children to thrive in kindergarten. But our larger job is to help children become curious thinkers, confident problem-solvers, kind classmates, and lifelong learners.
